Holiday travel with kids rarely goes exactly to plan. Flights get delayed, security lines stretch out, and the snacks run out an hour before landing. You can't control any of that, but you can control what's in your carry-on. These five habits make the hard moments easier.

- Plan for door-to-door, then add a cushion. Count the whole trip from your front door to your destination, not just the flight. A two-hour flight can easily become a six-hour stretch of feeding, changing and entertaining. Pack for that, plus a little extra.
- Build grab-and-go kits. Bundle a diaper, wipes, a disposal bag and cream into one small pouch. Make one kit for every two hours of travel, plus two spares. For older kids, do the same with a snack, a small activity and a wipe.
- Know the liquids rule for kids. Formula, breast milk and baby food can travel in amounts over 3.4 ounces and don't have to fit in your quart bag. Pack them together so they come out quickly at screening. Your own toiletries still follow the standard rule, so travel-size bottles keep that bag simple.
- Pack a spare outfit for everyone. Bring two compact outfits for each little one and one clean shirt for you. Add a wet bag so anything messy stays away from the clean clothes.
- Keep the essentials in one pocket. IDs, boarding passes, medications, your phone and a charging cable belong in one spot you can reach without unpacking.
The goal isn't a perfect trip. It's a calm one, where whatever happens, what you need is already within reach.
